The city of Youngstown, Ohio is situated just west of the Pennsylvania state line. The city of Youngstown is around halfway between New York City and Chicago via Interstate 80. It serves as the county seat of Mahoning County and is roughly 105 km southeast of Cleveland and 100 km northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The city of Youngstown is its own municipality but is popularly thought of as part of Greater Cleveland and the Pittsburgh Tri-State area.

The city's coal industry attracted numerous immigrants from Ireland, Germany and Wales during the early 19th century. By mid-century, a burgeoning iron industry attracted more workers. Several iron industrial factories were situated there. By the beginning of the 20th century, a steel industry arose thanks to the huge deposits of coal, iron and hardwood forests found within the region. The establishment of U.S. Steel during the year 1901 brought the region to prominence as a steel industry township. The city of Youngstown earned its place in labour history during the "Little Steel Strike" of the nineteen thirties. The strike established powerful national collective bargaining instruments to enhance the capacities of local industrial unions.

Big furnaces and numerous foundries operated within the city between the 1930's and the 1960's. Youngstown was a well-known center for industry. Nevertheless, during the downturn within manufacturing during the 1970's, many of the city's factories closed down, debilitating the economy of the city. The most significant blow occurred in 1969 when a significant part of Youngstown Steel and Tube closed down because of the merger between Lykes Corporation, based in New Orleans and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. This event virtually ruined the local steel business with ripples felt throughout the economy of the region.

Despite the decline of the steel business from its past glory, several metalworking and steel facilities are situated in Youngstown nowadays. Among the prominent companies are Delphi, Packard Electric Systems, Exal Corporation, WCI Steel Plant and V&M Star Steel Company. The biggest industrial business of the area is the plant of General Motors, located nearby. Turning Technologies, a successful software business, is situated within Youngstown.

Youngstown has fairly a few occupations which require a post-secondary degree, such as medical and health services managers, teachers, registered nurses, human resources specialists, wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, physical therapists, medical and public health social workers, social and human service assistants.
