Hamilton (population 62,447) is the county seat of Butler County, within southwestern state of Ohio, USA. The city of Hamilton forms part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The Hamilton City School District is considered the best urban school district within Ohio State. The district superintendent, Janet Baker, has been named the state's superintendent of the year.
Hamilton was historically an industrial town and still has lots of high-tech manufacturing facilities. These days the city is being revitalized through its support of the arts. It has been declared the 'City of Sculpture,' due to the wide variety of sculptures in Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and within the downtown area.
The area is currently called Hamilton but was named Fairfield back in 1794. Throughout that year, Fort Hamilton was constructed there. During the year 1810, the city of Hamilton was incorporated, but 5 years later lost its status after failing to hold elections. During 1827 the community was reincorporated and during 1857 it became a city. German immigrants were attracted to the city of Hamilton and influenced its culture, particularly its food and architecture. Paper production and iron works were two key industries which boomed in the city of Hamilton from the early to mid-20th century.
In 1913, much of Hamilton was destroyed during the Great Dayton Flood. The township later was called "Little Chicago" because many Chicago gangsters bought homes within Hamilton. In the second World War, Hamilton factories made supplies for the war. Then again, military workers were forbidden to enter the city on account of the many gambling establishments and prostitution that had taken root there.
Today Hamilton visitors and residents benefit from the city's various parks. Outdoor activities happen in Miami Woods, Joyce Park, Crawford Woods, Sanders Park and Milkin Woods. People could normally be seen strolling and bicycling on the scenic paved paths along the banks of the Great Miami River. There are lots of excellent golf courses within the area. The local ice rink is busy during winter with hockey and skating.
The residents of Hamilton normally go to nearby Cincinnati for cultural and sporting events. The Beach Waterpark and the Kings Island amusement and recreational center are also popular recreation areas located in the city of Hamilton. Additionally, there is a forest park situated in Campbell Gard on the Great Miami River.
