Kettering, Ohio is situated near Dayton and lies in both Greene and Montgomery Counties. With over 56,000 residents it is the largest suburb in the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kettering is named after Charles F. Kettering, inventor of the automobile self-starter, who resided there from 1914 to 1958. The city was incorporated during 1955 from the former Van Buren Township.

The area was first settled by John Patterson during the year 1798, but the Town of Van Buren wasn't established until the year 1841. The township later changed the name to the Village of Kettering in 1952, to honor the local inventor. From 1970 to 1980 the population dropped because of the decline of manufacturing, resulting in huge layoffs at the General Motors facilities during the 1980s.

Kettering residents benefit from the city's numerous recreational activities and parks. The famous Kettering Recreation Complex is busy year round. Golf enthusiasts could experience numerous excellent courses. Skate Plaza, an extensive skateboard park, was built as a collaboration between Kettering and Rob Dyrdek, a professional skateboarder who grew up in the city. Kettering's 20 parks cover 284 acres of land. The Fraze Pavilion is an outdoor entertainment facility that hosts the Dayton Philharmonic series of summer concerts, amongst other entertainment events.

The Fairmont High School campus opened the James S. Trent Arena, where commencements, championship sporting events and concerts are held. Rosewood Arts Center, housed within a former elementary school, draws 100,000 visitors a year with a gallery, exhibitions, visual art classes, and the Art on the Commons festival. There is easy access to Dayton, that provides various arts and entertainment opportunities.

The top employers within Kettering comprise Reynolds and Reynolds, Kettering Medical Center, GE Money and Intimate Brands. Additionally, the Berry Company has its head office in Kettering. Berry is a major publisher of Yellow Pages. The Wright Patterson Air Force Base close by is a main employer of Kettering's residents.
