Lakewood was at first an unbroken forest until Lakewood's first settler, James Nicholson, developed a large acreage and constructed a colonial home during the year 1818. The area prospered once the Civil War ended, and Lakewood's population significantly grew. Numerous notable mansions were constructed throughout this time by rich people.
