Lakewood is a city within Cuyahoga county, in the state of Ohio. It is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area and is five miles west of the city of Cleveland. The city is bordered by Lake Erie. Lakewood City is densely populated with a few distinct communities. Clifton Park is known as the wealthiest part of the city. The Gold Coast section is well-known by its high-rise upscale apartment buildings and condominiums. Madison Village has a vibrant counterculture ambiance. "Birdtown" residential district is a National Register Historic District.

Lakewood City has gone to great lengths so as to maintain its historic identity. The city's "Make Lakewood Beautiful" program awards those whose houses have best maintained their original design. A special building code requires development within Lakewood City to abide by the beauty of Lakewood City's brick and mortar buildings.

Lakewood was at first an unbroken forest until Lakewood's first settler, James Nicholson, developed a large acreage and constructed a colonial home during the year 1818. Throughout the mid-19th century, food production, specifically high-quality fruit, was a mainstay of the region's financial system. The area prospered once the Civil War ended, and Lakewood's population significantly grew. Numerous notable mansions were constructed throughout this time by rich people.

The development of trains and streetcar lines at the end of the 19th century, helped to boost the town's population again. Houses began building on agricultural lands. Central and Eastern European immigrants came to work within Lakewood City's factories. During 1911 Lakewood officially became a city.

Because the city of Lakewood is in close proximity to the city of Cleveland, the residents can benefit from a lot of cultural and entertainment attractions and professional sporting events. The near Cuyahoga Valley National Park has excellent hiking and bicycle riding trails and tours on the Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad. The Rocky River Valley is really a popular place also. Lake Erie's beaches are always well-known.

In Lakewood City, there are parks together with trails intended for jogging, bicycle riding as well as other outdoor activities. The Winterhurst Ice Rink is a favorite during winter. Lakewood park features a concert site. People get pleasure from strolling the boardwalk and enjoying the views of the Cleveland skyline.
