Dartmouth is a city with a population of over 65,000 people within Nova Scotia, Canada. The community was founded during the year 1750, and presently is considered a planning area and community of the Halifax Regional Municipality. It is situated on the eastern shoreline of Halifax Harbour and due to the abundance of lakes located in the city; it has been called the City of Lakes.

The Nova Scotia provincial governments merged many of the municipalities in Halifax County's boundaries in the year 1996. The formed a single-tier regional government called Halifax Regional Municipality or HRM. At this time, Halifax City, Dartmouth, the Municipality of Halifax County and Bedford Town were dissolved.

The HRM government has officially labeled the County of Halifax the "capital district", because it represents the urban core of the bigger regional municipality. During the time the city of Dartmouth was dissolved, the provincial government changed its status to a separate community to be able to serve Halifax. In 1996, the status as part of the metropolitan "Halifax" urban core existed prior to municipal re-organization.

In the year 1870, the original settlement was made in a area known as by the Mi'kmaq people as "Tomcod Ground" or "Boonamoogwaddy." Later on, the community was given the English name of Dartmouth in honor of the 1st Earl of Dartmouth, William Legge who was a former Secretary of State. During 1752, 193 individuals lived within the community, or 53 families.

Dartmouth City had a diverse economy that comprised a lot of industries, like for instance a molasses plant that dated as far back to the "triangular trade" with the West Indies. Furthermore, the city maintained the Volvo Halifax Assembly plant.

Since August the year 1895, local people known as "Dartmouthians" have celebrated a civic holiday referred to as "Natal Day." At first, the concept began as a means to celebrate the arrival of the railway, but on the chosen day, the construction of the railway tracks was unfinished. Because of the fact that all arrangements for the event were ready, the organizers of the event decided to go ahead with a celebration of the municipality's birthday instead.

The Dartmouth Natal Committee chose to construct a cairn in 1941, to honor the spirit and courage of the first settlers to the coast of Dartmouth. This cairn is situated in Leighton Dillman Park. This area is part of the common lands left to the community by the Quakers. The park overlooks the harbour where the first settlers homesteaded. The monument is 3 meters high and was built from rocks gathered on Martinique Beach. There is a plaque in front of the cairn that describes the arrival of the Alderney "on August 12, 1750 with 353 settlers."

Dartmouth City was the home to various Canadian Forces installations during the years, including CFB Shearwater. This base was situated at the southern border of the city and was an air force base that was before called the RCAF Station Dartmouth, Naval Air Station Halifax, RCNAS Shearwater, HMC Naval Radio Station Albro Lake, a radio receiver/transmitter facility. The Canadian Ammunition Depot Bedford is located on the border between Bedford and Dartmouth. This location is a munitions magazine for the Atlantic Maritime Forces. The CFB Halifax is an area on the Dartmouth waterfront that is opposite of the HMC Dockyard.
