The region emerged as a small trading community around 1789 near the eponymous Buffalo Creek. After the opening of the Erie Canal during the year 1825, Buffalo quickly grew along with the city as its western terminus. Buffalo became the 8th biggest in the nation by the year 1900 and grew to become a major railroad center.
