The city of Syracuse is the county seat of Onondaga County, New York and, with a population of 145,170, is the 5th most populous city within the state and the 170th largest city in the nation. The metropolitan area has a population of about 742,603. Syracuse is Central New York's economic and educational core, a region which is home to more than a million individuals. There are several convention sites situated within the city of Syracuse, including a convention complex downtown and the Empire Expo Center, which is situated directly west of Syracuse and hosts the annual great New York State Fair. The name of the city is derived from Siracusa, a city on the eastern shore of Sicily, an Italian island.

Initially, the land where the city of Syracuse lies was occupied by the Onondaga Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Iroquois had an alliance together with the British, causing them to drive out the first French traders and missionaries who arrived. Some of the significant historic events include the unearthing of salt in the mines nearby, the post-war granting of land to ex-officers of the Continental Army, and the completion of the Erie Canal, that happened in 1825.

There has been a huge exodus of industrial jobs in the area during the last couple of decades. A lot of the local and state government jobs have also been declining over the years. The most vital employers that remain within Syracuse are primarily within the service industries and education. Because of the recent expansions by Upstate Medical University and Syracuse University and the development of numerous small medical office complexes, the University Hill neighborhood is expanding.

Within the city of Syracuse, is a division of Time Warner Cable, in addition to a Bristol-Myers Squibb complex near the district of Eastwood. The company was founded by Hamilton College graduates.

There are also a few big employees within Syracuse, with most companies are small. This would allow for a certain stability level. Amongst the top eleven companies in Syracuse, eight are involved in the education or service industry. These industries tend to be a lot more stable than the manufacturing businesses.

The Opera Chorus of the Syracuse was initially established in 1963. It wasn't until ten years later during the year 1973 that this company became private, changing its name to the Syracuse Opera Company. As a general rule, the Syracuse Opera Company performs three full operas every season. There are several performances which are free held each year in Thornden Park and Armory Square, along with some other places. The company's yearly budget is 1 million US dollars. The Syracuse Opera Company is the only professional company in upstate New York.

The Syracuse Shakespeare Festival was launched officially in 2002, as a not-for-profit, charitable corporation. Their objective is to display and portray William Shakespeare's brilliant words. It is well-known for its annual Shakespeare-in-the-Park program at Thornden Park Amphitheater, that is provided free of charge. Ever since its beginning, the Syracuse Shakespeare Festival has drawn over 17,000 people. There are three other major programs that SSF produces: Avon Repertory Theatre, Shakespeare-Under-A-Roof and Kids Doing Shakespeare.
