St. John's is the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is located on the eastern section of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. It is considered to be the most populated city in the Metropolitan Area, and is the second largest CMA in the Atlantic Provinces. St. John is the oldest English-established settlement within North America, and tradition credits the explorer, John Cabot for the city's name. John Cabot is the first European to sail into the harbor. In 1500, it was officially established as a community by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, who declared it an English settlement in 1583. The area has seen several transformations, particularly during the 20th century, where oil fields, service centres and modern export strengthened the economic output of the city of St. John's to a much higher level.

There are various attractions within the city of St. John's for visitors to enjoy. Signal Hill is a main attraction because it offers panoramic views of the city, the Atlantic Ocean and the port. Additionally, the region has been the site of numerous military endeavours during the centuries. It received the first transatlantic wireless signal by Marconi in the year 1901. Cape Spear National Historic Site is believed to be the most easterly point in North America. Famous for its spectacular coastal surroundings, this key attraction is the oldest surviving lighthouse within Newfoundland which was fully restored to its original look.

The coastal waters of newfoundland and Labrador is also home to lots of unique marine animals, like the minke, humpback, right, sei, pothead, blue, sperm, and see fin whales. Outside the city limits is a marine bird sanctuary filled with seabirds along with various marine life during the summer months. In some seasons, tourists can also see the iceberg at certain vantage points in the city of St. John's. The Fluvarium is where people could look at Brook and Brown Trout within their natural environment. The Grand Concourse is amongst the major attractions within the city of St. John's. It is a series of fluvarium, urban walkways, historic sites, connecting parks, beautiful ponds, and Victorian architecture. Johnson GEO Centre has an exhibit area that geographically showcases natural rock walls which remain exposed in the exhibit areas. These rocks show the history of Labrador and Newfoundland which extends 3.7 billion years ago. The Room at Fort Townshend is a state-of-the-art cultural centre which preserves and protects the province's historical and cultural heritage. The Botanical Gardens of Memorial University covers about 45 hectares of land near the center of the city of St. John's. It is unique because it not only offers a botanical garden, but it likewise offers a natural reserve of about 212 species of flowering plants and ferns, 20 kinds of birds, and 26 butterfly species.

The gas and oil in the oceans around the city of St. John's have continued to drive the cities growth. The city has been recognized as having the biggest proportion of engineers and scientists per capita of any North American city below one million residents. Economic forecasts predict that the city would continue to have a strong economy in the coming years not just because of its natural resources, but likewise due to its tourism and new home construction.
