Located within Albuquerque City is the University of New Mexico or likewise called UNM and numerous other well-known institutions like for instance the Kirtland Air Force Base, the Petroglyph National Monument and the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute. Sandia National Laboratories are likewise based within the city of Albuquerque as well. The Rio Grande River flows through Albuquerque City from north to south and the Sandia Mountains exist along the eastern side of the city.
The city of Albuquerque was founded in the year 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost and was known as Ranchos de Albuquerque. During that first year, there were 18 families residing within the area. There are lots of the historical Spanish cultural heritage in the city of Albuquerque these days.
The area originally served as a farming community along the Camino Real. In time, the town became more of a military outpost. At one time, the city was considered the sheep-herding capital of the West. In 1706, Spain established a military garrison or a "presidio" in the community. Mexico also had a military garrison located there after the year 1821. The town was initially constructed in the conventional pattern of a Spanish community: a church, houses and government buildings all surrounded a central plaza.
Currently, Albuquerque is located at the heart of the New Mexico Technology Corridor. This is a group of high-tech private companies and government institutions which run along the Rio Grande. There are several big businesses who contribute to the population with their numerous workers like for instance Sandia National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base.
A lot of highly educated employees are brought into this rather remote area by the attendant contracting businesses. Like for example, within suburban Rio Rancho, Intel operates a large semi-conductor factory, also called a "fab," and its attendant huge capital investment is found within nearby Sandoval County. Tempur-Pedic is situated nearby I-40 on the West Mesa and Northrop Grumman is situated within northeast Albuquerque along I-25.
Steve Baer, a solar energy guru and an architectural design innovator of Zomeworks, situated his company in the region in the late 1960s. The Sandia and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as well as the Los Alamos National Laboratory cooperate here in an endeavor that started with the Manhattan Project.
In the month of January 2007, Tempur-Pedic opened up an 800,000 square foot mattress factory within northwest Albuquerque. During the year 2008, Schott Solar Inc. announced they would open up a 200,000 square foot facility which specializes in making receivers for CSPs or concentrated solar thermal power plants, along with 64MW of photovoltaic or also known as PV modules.
The University of New Mexico is located in the city and is New Mexico's largest public flagship university. UNM has a School of Medicine that ranked in the top 50 primary care oriented medical schools within the United States. Trinity Southwest University, the University of St. Francis College of Nursing and the National American University as well as Allied Health Department of Physician Assistant Studies are all located here too.
