The city of Bismarck (population 61,272) is the capital city of the state of North Dakota in the USA. The city of Bismarck is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from Mandan. Bismarck serves as the county seat of Burleigh County. After Fargo, the city of Bismarck is the 2nd biggest city by population in North Dakota State. The cities of Mandan and Bismarck form the core of the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The metropolitan area population is just over 100,000.
The original inhabitants before settlement were the Mandan peoples. The township was established during the year 1872 at a place on the river known as Missouri Crossing. The city's first name was Edwinton, named after the former engineer-in-chief for the Northern Pacific Railway, Edwin Ferry Johnson. As part of an effort to attract German investment, the Railway changed name of the city to Bismarck during 1873. The name was intended to honor Otto von Bismarck, the German chancellor. But it was the discovery of gold that caused Bismarck to boom. Gold was found within the Black Hills nearby in 1874, and Bismarck became a freight-shipping center at the last stop of the "Custer Route". Known as the capital of the Dakota Territory during the year 1883 and state capital of North Dakota in the year 1889, Bismarck became a center of government. The city of Bismarck also played an essential role within the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The city of Bismarck is home to the North Dakota State Capitol building, a 19-story tower and the tallest building within the state of North Dakota. The state government is Bismarck's largest employer, providing jobs for more than 4,000 residents. The city is also a center for retail and health care, forming the economic hub for a lot of north-central South Dakota and south-central North Dakota. Medcenter One Health Systems and St. Alexius Medical Center are Bismarck's largest health care providers, employing more than 4,000 residents. Other significant companies in Bismarck are Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Coventry Health Care, Midwest Motor Express and Bismarck Public Schools. The Federal Government of the United States also employs a lot within the city. The city is the home of MDU Resource Group, a Fortune 500 company.
