The city of Wilson (population 50,652) is the 17th biggest city in the state of North Carolina. It serves as the county seat of Wilson County within the coastal plain region. Wilson has a total land area of 23.3 square miles. Wilson is about 45 minutes drive east of Raleigh, the state capital.

The city was for a long time a small frontier town until 1845, when the Wilmington-Weldon Railroad arrived. From that point onward, the town grew rapidly. Wilson was officially established as a town during 1849. It was named to tribute Louis D. Wilson, a legislator and a soldier in the Mexican War. Agriculture was a mainstay of the area's economy.

The Arts Council of Wilson is really active in planning events for both visitors and residents. Many culture and arts events are held at the historical Boykin Center within downtown Wilson. History aficionados can go to the African-American History Museum, situated within the Freeman Round House, a building made of stone notable for its unique engineering. Fans of baseball can go to The North Carolina Baseball Museum, near Fleming Stadium. The city of Wilson also has a great Country Club. Another attraction is Wiggin Mills Reservoir.

Wilson's strong economic pillars are business and agriculture. Today, the city of Wilson is North Carolina's biggest farm market, and North Carolina's agricultural enterprises produce crops worth $100 million each year. Wilson is recognized as a great place to do business, making it the envy of numerous larger urban centers. Wilson could attract businesses serving national, international and regional markets by promoting its location, productive workforce, high quality of life and educational opportunities.
