The city of Kannapolis (population 43,000) is situated within the U.S. state of North Carolina. The city is part of the Charlotte - Gastonia - Rock Hill Metropolitan Area and sits along the I-85 corridor outside Charlotte. Kannapolis is a high growth area. It is 5 miles northwest of Concord and 21 miles northeast of Charlotte. Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Uptown Charlotte, the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Davidson College and the I-77 are all in a 20-minute drive from Kannapolis.
The city of Kannapolis was first settled in the year 1906 by James William Cannon who bought land within the region and built the Cannon Mills Company, that eventually became the biggest manufacturer of household textile in the world. The city of Kannapolis was named after the company. The mill village that developed provided the mill's employees with low rents and utilities, and many free municipal services, like maintenance and garbage collection. The employees were not required to pay taxes.
Bakers Creek Park is a popular recreation area with trails, a playground, miniature golf, picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, tennis courts, volleyball courts and ballfields. Lake Norman State Park is another famous park. The Textile Museum is situated in the Cannon Village Home Furnishings Marketplace, which consists of 30 stores selling home decor, clothing, furniture and gifts. The annual Christmas celebration is held there. History buffs can find out more about the development of the city of Kannapolis from its days as a textile village at the Cannon Memorial Library's history room.
The unique museum known as the Curb Museum for Motorsports and Music features both music and motorsports. Mike Curb, the museum's founder is a producer, songwriter, and the owner of a record company. The museum showcases his vast collection of racing and music memorabilia.
Situated in a renovated historic jailhouse, the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame honors the numerous famous performers of North Carolina: James Taylor, Earl Scruggs, George Clinton, John Coltrane, Kate Smith and more.
