The city of Kansas City, Missouri is the largest city in the state of Missouri. It is the key city in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and is commonly called "KC". The city of Kansas serves as the county seat of Jackson County even if it covers over 820 square km within the counties of Clay, Jackson, Platte and Cass. The city of Kansas has a population of roughly 459,800. The bigger metropolitan area has 2.1 million inhabitants.

KC is located at the confluence of the Kansas River and the Missouri River. It is also opposite Kansas City, Kansas. Initially, it was founded as a township during the year 1838 and later incorporated in 1850 as a city. KC was the location of the Battle of Westport and several other Civil War battles. Kansas City played an important part in the history of jazz and blues.

Etienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont, was the very first European to go to the region and explore the lower Missouri River. He was a commander at the French's Fort Detroit, but left after being criticized for his handling of Native American affairs. A deserter, became a fur trader, he evaded authorities and took a Native American wife.

The Greater Kansas area is home to a lot of Fortune 500 companies like for instance Hallmark Cards. Also within Kansas City are the head offices of Sprint Nextel Corporation, YRC Worldwide Inc., H&R Block and International Assets Holding Corporation. Other companies located there comprise Great Plains Energy, Aquila, AMC Theatres, Applebee's, Cerner, DST Systems, Garmin International and Russell Stover Candies. Three international law businesses are also based in the city of Kansas.

The most essential part of the city's economy is in agriculture. The city is home to Dairy Farmers of America, the biggest Dairy Co-op in the nation.

There are numerous lakes within the region all-around KC. These lakes offer a lot of recreational opportunities like for example fishing, swimming, boating and camping. Popular places are Lewis and Clark Lake, roughly 45 minutes north of the city, and Big Lake State Park, further north. Stockton Lake at Stockton State Park is known for scuba diving and is situated 160 km southeast of Kansas City.
