The city of Springfield is the third biggest city in the state of Missouri within the United States. It is the county seat of Greene County and had a population of around 159,498 during 2010 according to the census. This figure showed an increase of 5.2% since the 2000 census. The Springfield Metropolitan Area includes the counties of Webster, Dallas, Greene, Christian and Polk, and their combined population came in at 436,712. The City of Springfield is known as the birthplace of Route 66 and Springfield was referred to as the Queen City of the Ozarks.

The territory which was known as "Missouri" was included within the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Not long afterwards, the Delaware Native Americans received land treaty where Springfield's Sequiota Park and the antique stores of Galloway Village are presently located. The Kickapoo Native Americans constructed wickiups on the prairie towards the west and that area still nowadays bears their name.

On the 10th of August, the year 1821, Missouri became a state. The legislature during the year 1833 designated most of the southern area as a single county. The region was named for General Nathanael Greene, a famous figure during the American Revolutionary War. The name was selected largely because of a campaign by John Polk Campbell, the city's founder, in order to honor a man he admired.

The economy of Springfield is mostly based around the industries of manufacturing, health care, tourism, retail and education. In the year 2004, the Gross Metropolitan Product of 13.66 billion makes up approximately 6.7% of Missouri's Gross State Product.

During 2008, the city's leading employers consisted of: the United States Government, St. John's Health System, Wal-Mart Stores, CoxHealth, Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Marine, Springfield Public Schools, the State of Missouri and Citizens Memorial Healthcare.

The biggest shopping mall within the vicinity is Battlefield Mall. In the Springfield MSA, total retail sales are over $5.8 billion each year and within Springfield, the total retail sales exceed $4.1 billion yearly. Roughly over 3 million overnight tourists and millions of day trippers go to Springfield each year, according to the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau. There are over 60 lodging facilities and more than 6000 hotel rooms. Each year, the Convention & Visitors Bureau spends over 1 million dollars advertising Springfield as a travel destination.

The city boasts about 92 city parks, which include the Botanical Center at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 3 golf courses, a zoo, and other parks, that are managed or owned by the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. There are numerous programs offered by the center such as Hearts n' Parks, encouraging individuals to enjoy and take part in outdoor recreation. The department utilizes linear parks and a network of trails which run close by to unique parts of the Ozarks like for example creek beds and springs.
