New Brunswick's most heavily populated metro area is Moncton. The city of Moncton is likewise the second biggest city next to Halifax, within the Maritime Provinces. The area had its first inhabitants during the year 1733, even if the year 1766 was considered to be the official year it was founded, because it was the beginning of the arrival of Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants from the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The city of Moncton was once an agricultural settlement, and its name was taken from the name of Lt. Col. Robert Monckton, the British officer who was able to capture nearby Fort Beausejour a century earlier. Moncton grew rapidly in the 20th century, specially after lobbying helped the city become the eastern terminus of National Transcontinental Railway project during the year 1912.

The main centre for cultural entertainment within the city is Moncton's Capitol Theatre, an 800-seat restored 1920's-era Vaudeville house on Main Street. The theater provides the New Brunswick Symphony Orchestra, performing arts, Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, and many theatrical performances. The Aberdeen Cultural Centre is the major Acadian cultural cooperative that consists of numerous studios and galleries. There are several community groups within Moncton that provide exceptional stage entertainment. Individuals could go to McSweeney's Dinner Theatre, Theatre I'Escaouette, Aberdeen Cultural Centre, and Universite de Moncton - Sociocultural Services in order to see performing artists at their best.

There are lots of museums in the city of Moncton. They consist of the Baptist Heritage Centre, Acadian Museum, Le Centre Culturel Aberdeen Cooperative Ltee, Lutz Mountain Meeting House and Heritage Museum, the Prayer garden, Moncton 100 Monument and the Thomas Williams House. The Acadian Museum features temporary exhibits, a permanent exhibit, and guided tours and screenings of documentaries and historical films. The Heritage Center gathers and exhibits the material history of the Baptist denomination in Atlantic Canada. Le Centre Culturel Aberdeen Cooperative Ltee features painting, live theatre, dance, sculpture, cinema, crafts, photography, martial arts and more. Those who are interested in arts and crafts could go to the Art Across the Marsh Studio Tour, Economusee, Hudson Oddities, The Olivier Soapery, and Turner's Victoria Park Arts and Crafts Fair.

Moncton has a tradition of being a strong influence in the distribution, commercial and transportation centres of the nation. Among its major sectors comprise education, health care, information technology and insurance. In the year 2004, the city of Moncton has been named by the Canadian Business Magazine as "The best city for business in Canada," and in the year 2007 was named "the fifth most business-friendly small-sized city in North America.
