Flint is a city within Michigan State. It is situated 66 miles or 106 km northwest of Detroit. The U.S. Census Bureau recorded the population during 2010 to be 102,434, making the city of Flint the 7th largest city within the state. Flint serves as the county seat of Genesee County. This occupies the Flint/Tri-Cities area of Michigan. Moreover, Genesee County is the entirety of Flint's metropolitan region and is the 4th biggest metropolitan area in Michigan state. In the year 2010 the population of the region was 425,790.

In 1819, Jacob Smith, a prominent Detroit fur trader founded Flint. The location was an ideal site as a stopover on the overland route between Detroit and Saginaw. It didn't take long for the region to grow into a significant but small village. The settlement became incorporated as Flint during the year 1855. The name was chosen from the river running through the region. The city of Flint established itself as a lumber center during the latter half of the 19th century. As the century drew to a close the city was able to leverage its lumbering infrastructure into a burgeoning carriage-manufacturing business. Flint soon became nicknamed "Vehicle City," since it became the largest carriage-making center in the world. The city of Flint was in the forefront of the new auto industry when horse-drawn carriages gave way to the arrival of automobiles.

In the year 1908, General Motors Corporation was founded in the city of Flint by William C. Durant. The manufacturing and automobile assembly quickly grew into a major industry. Flint has remained closely tied to the auto business during the 20th century. The city of Flint has ridden the wave of the industry's times of success and hardships that have taken place.
