With the coming of the railroad, the Town of Sterling accommodated four passenger trains on a daily basis from Detroit. Sterling Township became Sterling Heights when it was incorporated officially as a city during the year 1968. The word "Heights" was added in order to distinguish the city from a village known as Sterling within Arenac County.
