The small city of Steinbach is situated within the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, and has a current population of 13,500 people. The city of Steinbach is located a little more than 65km from the provincial capital, Winnipeg and is the biggest community within the Eastman region. The city is located in the R.M. of Hanover and surrounded towards the east by the R.M. of La Broquerie.

The region was firstly colonized by German Mennonite peoples in the year 1874, who gave the name of "Steinbach" which translates to "Stony Brook." The city of Steinbach continues to have a strong Mennonite and German influence these days with over 50 percent of the residents claiming German heritage. The city of Steinbach is situated on the eastern edge of the Canadian Prairies, whilst Sandilands Provincial Forest is a short distance east of the city.

The community of Steinbach's economy is primarily based on agriculture, though it remains the regional economic center within southeastern Manitoba. The trading region for the city of Steinbach reaches around 50,000 people, hence the city of Steinbach maintain many service and commercial businesses to serve the population. Steinbach is the fastest-growing city within Manitoba, with a population growth of 19.9% between the 2001 and the 2006 census periods, that ranks the city of Steinbach as the 5th biggest community in Manitoba.

The areas of southeast Manitoba were initially lands of the nomadic Ojibway speaking Anishinabe people. They used their traditional lands for hunting, fishing, and trapping. The Anishinabe knew no borders at the time and their land ranged both north and south of the US-Canadian border, and both west and east of the Red River. On August 3, 1871 the Anishinabe people signed Treaty 1 and moved onto reserves such as the Brokenhead Indian Reserve and Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation Reserve. Soon thereafter the government started staking out and surveying the land for the East Reserve.

Many of the jobs within the district of Southeastern Manitoba come from the retail and service sectors, whilst the huge manufacturing plants operated by Biovail and Loewen Windows provide the area with many jobs. The city of Steinbach has different jobs and industries in the community. The rapid growth rate of Steinbach, along with the lowest taxes within the province by mill rate, has made the community an even more popular place for both workers and employers. This combination has really helped a lot of different large-sized and mid-sized businesses in manufacturing, transportation, pharmaceuticals, agribusiness, financial and retail services like the Steinbach Credit Union, to grow along with the city. Therefore Steinbach presently has the third highest assessment value among cities within the province, trailing just Winnipeg and Brandon.

Agriculture, the traditional industry in the area, continues to play a considerable part in Steinbach's economy too. The agricultural industry within the area is notable for many of the big commercial pig, and poultry farming operations within the district of the city of Steinbach. Aside from intensive chicken and pig barns there are various small, family, dairy farms which dot the area. Crops grown on the fertile farmland neighboring Steinbach mainly comprise corn, alfalfa, conola as well as soybeans, barely, oats, and wheat.
