Lowell is a city situated in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in the USA. The population of the city was 106,519 in 2010, according to the U.S. census. The city of Lowell is Massachusetts' 4th biggest city. It is known as being the origin of the industrial revolution within the country. A lot of the historic places within Lowell have been preserved by the National Park Service. Both Cambridge and Lowell are the county seats of Middlesex County.

The town of Lowell was originally established during the early 1820s. It was incorporated as a township during the year 1826 and in 1836 was incorporated as a city. The region was based on the dream of a planned industrial community which was constructed around the natural power that came from the Merrimack River.

The name of Lowell really comes from a prominent industrialist of that time named Francis Cabot Lowell. He played a large role in developing the canal and power system in the area. He was likewise significant in the massive mill complex which grew around Lowell, eventually making Lowell among New England's biggest cities and one of the biggest industrial centers within the United states.

The industrial boom in the 19th century allowed for much economic change to take place within Lowell through the majority of the 20th century. Lowell became at the forefront of a technological boom in the 1980s. Many companies started making minicomputers, plastics, along with computer workstations. The city of Lowell gained prominence becoming the global head office and home of Wang Laboratories, which was one of the major players of the minicomputer industry.

The market changed greatly in the 1990s, due to the arrival of microprocessors and personal computers, Lowell saw a major decline throughout the decade and a steady decline in its economic power. Currently, Lowell is enjoying an upswing once more. It is fueled by a resurgence of the technology within the region, together with the growth of new service industries. These new revitalizations to the economy in the city of Lowell have brought a fresh new depth to the city's culture, together with more ethnicity.

The service sector of Lowell City has shown through statistics to support about one-quarter of the city's employees. Popular industries consist of: tourism, trade, electronics, research, transportation and healthcare. Additionally, the city has a diversified industrial sector together with many small businesses.
