The city of Baton Rouge and its nearby area is referred to as the "Capital Area." The region is located along the Mississippi River within Louisiana's southeast region. The town owes its historical importance to its site situated at Istrouma Bluff. This is the first bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta. It serves the community by protecting the people of the city from flooding, hurricanes and other natural emergencies from nature. The city of Baton Rouge likewise has built a levee system in addition to this natural barrier. Baton Rouge's history could be traced all the way back to 1699, when Sieur d'Iberville, a French explorer, led an exploration party up the Mississippi River.
