Usually known as "The Forest City", the city of Rockford was founded by Germanicus Kent during 1834 and called Midway, because of the village's location halfway between Kent's hometown of Galena and the bustling Chicago. In 1852 Rockford officially became a city with a growing population due to the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad, which ran through it. By the early part of the twentieth century, Rockford had become an essential manufacturing and industrial center. Several manufacturers which are recognized nationally established themselves here. Faced with a decline after the Second World War ended, the economy has in recent years recovered to focus on becoming an entertainment, commercial and cultural center.
The region has various manufacturing enterprises that manufacture machine tools and hardware, some of which supply the aerospace business. Numerous chemical manufacturing companies are situated here, as well. Increasingly, high-technology firms are being attracted to the city. Most jobs within Rockford are provided by the following sectors: education, healthcare, metal products, manufacturing, government, accommodation and food services, finance and insurance.
Rockford has a wide range of cultural attractions. The Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center is an important location for world-renowned and local artists. The New American Theater mounts professional theatrical productions each year. The Burpee Museum of Natural History exhibits collections of fossils, animals, rocks and minerals. The Discovery Center Museum has a planetarium and fascinating exhibits. The Erlander Home Museum provides glimpses into the Swedish settlers in the region. The Ethnic Heritage Museum relates the history of the early Italians, Irish, African-Americans, Polish, Lithuanians and Hispanics. Beyond these urban draws, the natural surroundings of Rockford provide numerous outdoor recreational activities.
