The city of Peoria, Illinois is located along the Illinois River and has an approximate population of about 115,007. The Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area (population 372,487) is the third-most populated metro area within the state of Illinois outside of the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

"Peoria" was the name of a key tribe in the Illinois Indian confederacy, the Peoria people. The first village was known as Fort Clark, but was afterward renamed in 1825. It was more than a decade afterward that Peoria was incorporated as a township. A decade afterward, it became a city. The issue of slavery during the Civil War left its mark on Peoria's past. During 1854, Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln both spoke about the issue to the people of the city on the courthouse steps. In the first part of the 20th century, the city of Peoria was popular for liquor production and Vaudeville entertainment.

The Peoria Riverfront Museum is located in the downtown of the city of Peoria. It features interactive displays, exhibits and a planetarium. The city is also home to the Lakeview Museum for the Arts and Sciences and Wheels o' Time Museum. The Peoria Civic Center is an expansive facility hosting conventions and entertainment activities. Bradley Park was built during the year 1910 and features gardens with a Japanese Bridge.

There is a strong manufacturing base within the city of Peoria, because over 200 companies that manufacture more than 1,000 different products. A lot of the focus for these businesses is in the production of machinery and internal combustion engines intended for the markets in North America.
