Springfield, Illinois is the third largest in the state and serves as the capital city of the state and the county seat of Sangamon County. Based on the 2010 Census Bureau, the population of Springfield was around 116,250, making it the 2nd most populated city within Illinois outside of the Chicago Metropolitan Area and the 6th most populated city within the State of Illinois.

In the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area, just over 208,000 residents live there. This area includes Sangamon County, in addition to Menard County. The current site of Springfield City was first settled during the latter part of the 1810s, around the time that Illinois became a state.

Abraham Lincoln is the most well-known past resident of Springfield. He lived there from the year 1837 until the year 1861, when he moved to the White House. Some of the city's major tourist spots comprise various historic locations that are associated with Lincoln. A huge race riot erupted in the city during 1908 that resulted in the founding of the NAACP after the horrible lynching of two African American residents.

The City of Springfield is situated on a mostly flat plain which encompasses most of the nearby countryside. Near the Sangamon River, there is more hilly terrain. A big artificial lake referred to as Lake Springfield is owned by City Water, Light and Power. The company called CWLP provides the City of Springfield with recreation and drinking water.

The weather conditions within the City of Springfield is somewhat typical for middle latitude areas. The inhabitants experience cold winters and hot summers. The weather during Spring and Summer is similar to that of most of Midwestern cities. Tornadoes happened in the City of Springfield in 1957 and the year 2006 and thunderstorms are common.

Springfield is governed by a mayor-council type of government. The government of the state of Illinois is based within the city of Springfield and the city proper is additionally the "Capital Township" governmental entity. Several of the state government entities found in the city comprise the Illinois General Assembly, the Illinois Supreme Court and the Office of the Governor of Illinois. There are 2 private and 3 public high schools within the City of Springfield. District No. 186 operates the public schools within the city. The economy of the city is marked by government jobs. This particular sector is responsible for a major part of Springfield's work force.

In the city, a high proportion of the jobs are centered about the government of the state. The county and state governments are both the largest employers in the city as of 2002. These two governments provided the city and county with about 17,000. Approximately 30,000 of Springfield's non-agricultural jobs are because of state, local and county government jobs, according to 2007 statistics. About 17,000 to 18,000 jobs within the City of Springfield are provided by health care, transportation and utilities and the trade industries. Memorial Health Systems was the largest private sector employer in the year 2002. That year, approximately 3400 people worked for that company.
