Cedar Rapids is the state of Idaho's 2nd largest city. The city is located along both banks of the Cedar River, around 160 m or 100 miles east of Des Moines, the state's largest city and capital; and 20 miles or 32 km north of Iowa City. The city of Cedar Rapids forms the county seat of Linn County. The City Hall and the Linn County Courthouse are both situated on Mays Island within the Cedar River. The location of the present Cedar Rapids was in the territory of the Fox and Sac Tribes. Osgood Shepherd arrived in 1838 as the first permanent settler. Initially, when the town was first established, it was called Columbus by Mr. William Stone. Later on in 1841, it was renamed and resurveyed by N.B. Brown along with his associates. The new name of Cedar Rapids was named for the rapids in the Cedar River at the location. The river was named to honor the huge red cedar trees which profusely grew along its banks. On the 15th of January, the year 1849, the city of Cedar Rapids became incorporated.
