The city of Davenport, Iowa is situated in the states Scott County. Located along the Mississippi River, the city of Davenport serves as the largest city and county seat of Scott County. On the 14th of May, 1836 Antoine LeClaire established Davenport. He name the city for George Davenport, his friend who was a colonel in the Black Hawk War and was stationed nearby within Fort Armstrong.
The population of Davenport is approaching 100,000 people based on 2010 census numbers. At present, it is the 3rd biggest city within Iowa. During the year 2011, Bill Gluba the city mayor declared the city of Davenport the biggest of the Quad Cities. The Quad Cities consist of neighboring Bettendorf and likewise the cities of Rock Island, East Moline and Moline in the state of Illinois. The combined population of the Quad Cities is approximately 379,690.
After the Black Hawk War in 1832, Keokuk and General Winfield Scott signed a treaty. When the Civil War was over, the Iowa Soldiers Orphan's Home was established in order to take care of thousands of homeless children. Later on, it became the residence for orphans from all counties and children from broken homes within the state.
In the 1920s, the construction business was booming and the economy was booming. After the World War II, the economy started to thrive again. Some notable corporations such as Oscar Meyer and Ralston Purina constructed factories within the western area of Davenport.
