When gold was discovered in the Fraser Canyon in 1857, more than 30,000 gold miners trekked the goldfields, usually passing through the Chilliwack area in their travels. This resulted in its development, and steamboat landings on the Fraser River called Chilliwack landing, Sumas Landing, and Miller's Landing likewise contributed to Chilliwack's expansion. Chilliwack was incorporated during 1873, making it the third municipality within British Columbia.

There are a lot of attractions in the city of Chilliwack for the visitors and residents to pick from. Amongst these attractions, Minter Gardens has many beautiful tulips that have been imported from Holland. What's more, there are at least 100,000 rhododendrons which provide a great backdrop in the rock wall and cedar trees terraces. The Rotary Outdoor Pool offers tourists public swimming, swimming lessons and special events. Promontory Park West is located between Teskey Road and cedar Creek Drive. This 4.8 hectare park comprises a full circuit walking trail, two small soccer fields, a playground and two baseball diamonds. Mount Cheam is the best place to go to for hiking. Its trail zig zags to verdant meadows to rough terrain on the top, and those who climb its peak would be rewarded by breathtaking views of the park. Chilliwack River Rafting is just fifteen minutes from the town centre, and individuals who love rafting can pick a moderate or challenging rafting trip.

One alternative for families is to ask for a more family-oriented program. Situated on Old Yale Rd, and Yale Rd East is the Rosedale Sportsfield and Park, which is a 5.8 hectare park which provides playgrounds, washroom facilities, ball fields, and cozy picnic spots. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a 325-acre location which is situated on Veddar River's floodplain. It contains hundreds of Great Blue Heron nests and several other species of wildlife, vegetation, and different uncommon animals, like Salish Suckers, Painted Turtles and Bald Eagles. T-Rex Motorsports provides vehicles for riding, such as bikes and ATV's. Cheam Lake Wetlands is popularly known for bird-watching, picnics, and hikes. Its trails are estimated to be two kilometers, and the park likewise boasts of raised walkways and elevated viewing platform. Gwyne Vaughan Park has approximately six acres of prime land and a heritage home given to Chilliwack. Chilliwack Corn Maze attracts many families. This yearly event creates a maze out of the corn fields and tourists are challenged to find their way out. Portage Park is perfect for individuals who want to spend their afternoons in a relaxed picnic.
