The Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship requires an obligation to practice as an LPN or RN in Kansas.  If the student wishes, they can have a sponsor and receive more funding. An eligible sponsor means any adult care home, psychiatric hospital, medical care facility, home health agency, local health department or any state agency, which employs LPNs or RNs, licensed by the State of Kansas.  The sponsor cannot be located in the following counties Butler, Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, Reno, Riley, Saline, Sedgwick, Shawnee, or Wyandotte. The sponsor will provide employment upon licensure of the recipient.  Priority is given to the sponsor is a mental health center or treatment facilities to be a sponsor. The obligation for the scholarship is to work for the sponsor for one year for each year of the scholarship support received.

KANSAS NURSING SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

The Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship is designed to encourage enrollment in LPN or RN nursing programs.

Recipients sign a promissory note with the State of Kansas agreeing to practice nursing one year for each year of scholarship support.

Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship NEW or RENEWAL application instructions:

1. Must be accepted to a Kansas nursing program (pre-nursing will not be funded);

2. Complete/submit the FAFSA, priority deadline April 1;

3. State of KS Student Aid Application submitted online at sfa.kansasregents.gov by priority date May 1;

4. Student must be enrolled in 12 credit hours or more.

  • New recipients must sign a promissory note with the state of Kansas
  • Renewal applicants are students who received this scholarship the prior year.
  • A higher scholarship amount is available to students with an eligible sponsor* in a rural opportunity zone. Sponsorship is not required, but will increase the amount of funding awarded to the recipient. If the recipient has a sponsor, they are required to work for that facility after graduation.
  • An eligible sponsor is any adult care home, psychiatric hospital, mental health or treatment facility, medical care facility, home health agency, local health department or any state agency, which employs LPNs or RNs, licensed by the State of Kansas. The sponsor CANNOT be located in the counties of Butler, Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, Reno, Riley, Saline, Sedgwick, Shawnee, or Wyandotte.

Preference in awarding is given to a mental health or treatment facility.

Award Amounts:

  • Recipients enrolled 12 credit hours or more in a Licensed Practical Nurse program are eligible for $4000 each school year and a Registered Nurse program are eligible for $5000 each school year.
  • Recipients enrolled 12 credit hours or more in Recipients enrolled 12 credit hours or more with a sponsor will receive $5000 per school year for LPN, $6250 for RN.

If the number of applications received exceeds the funding available, then renewal applicants and students with the greatest financial need are prioritized.

Recipient obligation:

The service obligation requires the recipient to complete their nursing program and licensure then work full-time as an RN or LPN one year for each year that scholarship assistance was received in the state of Kansas. If the student has a sponsor, they must work for that facility.

  • If a recipient is unable to fulfill the service obligation to the state, they will be subject to repaying the scholarship amount and interest will be added to the total at a rate of 5%.
