Robert Holmes Scholarship

Scholarship Value: $1,000
Awards Available: 6

The purpose of the Robert Holmes Scholarship Program is to assist the legal dependents of Michigan Teamsters in pursuing a program of undergraduate education.

Up to six scholarships of $1,000 or more will be awarded to students entering college as a freshman in the fall. Scholarship recipients may re-apply up to three additional years, if full-time enrollment has been maintained. Award determinations will be made with the assistance of the Robert Holmes Scholarship Advisory Committee.

The scholarship materials are available online on the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

WHO MAY APPLY?

  • Scholarship applicants must be entering their first year of college in the fall and be legal dependents of members of Michigan locals of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT).
  • Members must be active or have been placed on a seniority list as of March 15 of the previous year.
  • Dependents of employees of the Michigan Teamsters Joint Council #43 and/or its affiliates are not eligible, nor are dependents of employers of Michigan Teamsters.
  • Employees of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and their dependents, members of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan Board of Trustees and their dependents as well as the members of the Scholarship Advisory Committee and their dependents are ineligible for scholarship consideration.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR SELECTION?

  • Strong scholastic performance while in high school or significant academic improvement in each successive year, achieving the equivalent of a B average at graduation.
  • Exemplary qualities of leadership in school, extra-curricular activities, and the community.
  • Class rank is an important factor in the selection process. However, extenuating circumstances are also considered.
  • Application or acceptance as a full-time, first-year student at an accredited post-secondary educational certificate/degree program; e.g., a four-year or two-year public/private college or university, a two-year technical college, or other accredited educational institution located in Michigan. Such institutions must be tax-exempt educational institutions under the Internal Revenue Code.
  • In making the selections, the Advisory Committee will be sensitive to the geographic balance of applicants and scholarship recipients.
  • All awards will be made without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or sexual identification.

WHAT ARE THE AWARD CONDITIONS?

  • No Robert Holmes Scholarship Award will be paid unless the school in which the recipient enrolls agrees not to reduce the grant aid previously offered to that student, unless the reduction is required by federal or state law. Scholarship awards may reduce the size of work-study or student loan awards made available by the institution, however.
  • If an award recipient withdraws from the educational institution, the award will be cancelled and the unspent portion, if any, will be returned to the Foundation.
  • If a recipient chooses to take a course or series of courses in a tax-exempt educational institution other than the one to which they were originally admitted, or if they wish to transfer to another tax-exempt educational institution in Michigan, the Robert Holmes Scholarship Award will not be forfeited if the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is notified in advance of such transfer.
