Chicana/o Scholarship

The Chicano Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to incoming freshmen (Utah high school graduates), current undergraduate students, and to graduate students at the University of Utah. Eligible students are selected on the basis of family background, life challenges, scholastic effort, and involvement in community activities that promote cultural pride and strengthen the Chicana/o/x/ – Latinx community. Financial need may strongly influence the final selection. The Chicano/a Scholarship will be administered and awarded by the Scholarship Committee in the Center for Equity and Student Belonging (CESB) at the University of Utah.

Criteria:

  • Must be registered as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours or more) or graduate student (9 credit hours or more).
  • Must be admitted and currently enrolled at the University of Utah.
  • A resident of the state of Utah, or a Dreamer (with or without DACA) who graduated from a Utah High School.

Preference:

  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate involvement in community activities that promote cultural pride and strengthen the Chicana/o/x/ – Latinx community

Failure to provide your current resume, letters of recommendation/references, or answer the short essay questions will automatically disqualify you.

Supplemental Questions

  1. Discuss your familial background (i.e., familial history, strengths, and challenges)
    • In the spirit of the Chicanx/Latinx struggle for equality and social justice, discuss personal challenges you have had to overcome in order to pursue your educational goal of attending college (i.e., lack of supportive role models, non-traditional student, poverty, first-generation college student, etc.) and how overcoming these challenges have helped you grow as an individual. You may wish to answer questions number one and two together.
    • Discuss persons and/or events that have influenced or encouraged you the most in your educational goals and academic endeavors. Discuss     how these persons and/or events have helped you in achieving your educational goals and academic endeavors.
    • Discuss how your educational and professional goals may contribute to the advancement of the Chicanx/Latinx community.
    • Discuss the nature of your involvement in the Chicanx/Latinx community (i.e., school, political, social, church, etc.).
    • List all non-paid volunteer positions you have held in the past three years. Include the nature and length of your involvement. Are volunteer    hours a requirement for graduation?
