Child Custody Analysis Scholarship

Scholarship Value: $1,000

Awards Available: 2

Award Deadline: Jun 30, 2026

Child custody can be a traumatic experience for children. It is also a highly debated topic in both legal disputes and personal discussions. These matters can be incredibly complex and have lasting effects on a child’s life, both good and bad. Some believe that, in these cases, adults can be trusted to act in the best interest of the children. Others believe that the adults’ past actions may be directly associated with the reasons custody needs to be arranged in the first place, and as such, the children who are of an age of maturity and involved in such a situation should have a larger say in the outcome.

We are offering a $1,000 scholarship to shed light on this important debate and spark discussion around this topic through the form of an essay to two lucky students. Who do you think should have more say in a custody arrangement, the adults or the children? Support your argument and discuss solutions that may satisfy all parties. For purposes of this essay, assume the children must be at least 12 years of age to have a say or opinion in this situation. The student who submits the best essay alongside their school transcripts and a professional resume will win $1,000 to go towards their education.

Eligibility

  • Any current high school senior, vocational student, college student or graduate student who is a legal resident of the United States residing in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia and who is enrolled in a vocational program or two to four year post-secondary institution is encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

  • The candidate must submit a 700-1,000 word essay response to the prompt: Child custody is a highly debated topic both in legal disputes and in personal discourse. When it comes to determining custody, do you believe that the adult should be in charge of the best interests of the child, or that the child should have a say in what they believe are their best interests? Explain your position and potential solutions to favoring all parties involved in a child custody case.
  • The candidate must submit a professional resumé that lists their experience, both professional and academic.
  • The candidate must submit a transcript from their current school. First-year college students, graduate students, or individuals who have recently transferred schools may submit an unofficial transcript from their current school, as well as the most recent official transcript from their prior school. • There will be two lucky winners, one local to Texas and one national student.
