Hugh A. Smith Scholarship Fund

This is an outright grant of $500 for high school seniors and college-level freshmen or sophomores who are in need of educational assistance, and are enrolled or intend to enroll in an approved junior college, college, university, or trade school located in the state of Kansas. The applicant must be the son or daughter of a veteran; the parent(s) must have been a member of the Kansas American Legion and/or Legion Auxiliary for the past three years. The sons or daughters of deceased members in either organization are also eligible if the parent’s dues were paid up at the time of death. The applicant must be an average or better student scholastically, and must show a high school transcript (with grade point average).

Ted and Nora Anderson Scholarships

Four $500 scholarships awarded annually to children of Legion and Auxiliary members. Selections by Department Oratorical and Scholarship Committee are based upon scholastic standing, financial need, major field, etc.

Albert M. Lappin Scholarship

An outright grant of $1,000, applicants for this scholarship must be a Kansas high school senior or college level freshman or sophomore, and the son or daughter of a veteran who has been a member of The Kansas American Legion or its Auxiliary for the past three years. The sons or daughters of deceased members in either organization are also eligible if the parent’s dues were paid-up at time of death.

Music Committee Scholarship

The name of this scholarship, to be awarded annually, will be the “American Legion Music Committee Scholarship”. This $1,000 scholarship is available to all Kansas high school students who have distinguished themselves in the field of music and/or who will major or minor in music at an approved Kansas junior college, college, or university.

Rosedale Post 346 Scholarship

Two scholarships of $1,500, applicants for this scholarship must be a Kansas high school senior or college level freshman or sophomore, and the son or daughter of a veteran who has been a member of The Kansas American Legion or its Auxiliary for the past three years. The sons or daughters of deceased members in either organization are also eligible if the parent’s dues were paid-up at the time of death.

Charles W. & Annette Hill Scholarship

An outright grant of $1,000, applicants for this scholarship must be a Kansas high school senior or college level Freshman or sophomore, and the descendent of a veteran who has been a member of The Kansas American Legion for the past three years. The descendents of deceased members in either organization are also eligible if the veteran’s dues were paid-up at time of death.

Scouting Scholarship

Scouting, on all levels, has always been an important Legion program. Kansas Legion Posts sponsor some fifty-five Scout Troops and Explorer Posts, with expenditures in excess of $10,540, involving over 835 scouts. However, many more scouts benefit annually from The American Legion through direct and indirect aid and leadership that are unreported.

The American Legion Life Insurance Trust Fund provides for an $10,000 National Scholarship to be awarded to the Eagle Scout who is selected “The American Legion Scout of the Year”. The individual selected will be named by the National Americanism Commission during the annual National Spring Meetings. Three runner-up scholarships, at $2,500 each have been added to the scholarship awards. The Department of Kansas also gives a $500 scholarship to the Kansas Scout of the Year.

The scholarship may be used to attend a school selected by the student, providing it is state-accredited, above the high school level, and within the continental limits of the United States, except in the case where the student may be from a possession of the United States, in which case he can select a school in that possession or in the Continental United States.

Shooting Sports Scholarship

An outright grant of $500, applicants for this scholarship must be a Kansas high school senior or college level freshman, who has participated in an American Legion Shooting Sports program in the State and Regional levels. The applicant must be an average or better student scholastically.

U.S. “Udie” Grant Scholarship

U.S. “Udie” Grant Scholarship – The purpose of the U.S. “Udie” Grant Scholarship is to assist financially in the education of needy and worthy children and grandchildren of Kansas Legionnaires.  Applicants must be a current 3-year member of the Sons of the American Legion within the Detachment of Kansas.

Jay B. Thielen Scholarship

Jay B. Thielen Scholarship – The purpose of the Jay B. Thielen Scholarship is to assist financially in the education of needy and worth children and grandchildren of Sons of The American Legion members of the Detachment of Kansas or members of the Sons of the American Legion of the Detachment of Kansas.  Five scholarships in the amount of $500.00 each are annually awarded.
