The One Awards acknowledge and share the ingenuity of aspiring professionals to the joint benefit of Hydro One and our customers. November 1 marks the closing date of submission and nominations for outstanding people who demonstrate the traits that make us the innovative, diverse organization we are.

William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award

William Peyton Hubbard was instrumental in the development and public control of hydroelectric power in Ontario. The son of a freed slave from Virginia, he was Toronto’s first Black Alderman, Controller and Acting Mayor in the early part of the 20th century. In his honour, Hydro One sponsors annual awards for outstanding Black undergraduate students attending an Ontario college or university studying energy industry-related disciplines. In addition to a cash award, recipients will be offered a paid work term with Hydro One.

AWARD VALUE:

  • 4 Awards of $5,000 each are available to Black students attending an Ontario university or college.
  • Students receiving the award will also have a chance to obtain a paid developmental work term with Hydro One.

AWARD CRITERIA:

The application/award will only be open to anyone who meets all of the following eligibility requirements (i.e. the application/award will not be open to anyone who does not meet all of the following eligibility requirements):

  • The term Black is defined as individuals of Black African descent, including African, African Canadian, African American, African Latino and/or Caribbean heritage.
  • The term Black Identifying includes anyone who is of Black descent as defined above, including bi-racial, mixed/blended individuals.
  • Application is open to those who have a connection to the Black community through one or both of their parents.

All applicants must be

  • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants enrolled in full time study in an accredited Ontario university or college.
  • The Awards will be given to Black students who have completed a minimum of two years in an undergraduate program in one of the following areas: Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering/Technology, IT, or Business at the university or college level.
  • Have a minimum B+ GPA
  • Have demonstrated leadership skills with involvement in extra-curricular activities within the community or campus
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Students must be returning to school on a full-time basis
  • Applicants must include a copy of their unofficial transcripts and updated resume along with their application.

SELECTION OF WINNERS:

Following the application deadline (November 1) applications are reviewed by Hydro One Management. The top candidates are short-listed for an interview. The interview candidates are then ranked based on their interview scores and the top candidates are chosen as the winners.

AWARD LUNCHEON

Hydro One will arrange an awards luncheon for the award winners and their 2 invited guests where the monetary award will be presented.

WORK TERM WITH HYDRO ONE:

In addition to the financial award, the winners will also have a chance to obtain a paid developmental work term with Hydro One.
