2023-2024 Official Rules for the National Math Club
The eligibility rules of the National Math Club state that a group must consist of at least 4 U.S. students in grades 6-8 and have regular in-person or virtual meetings to participate in the National Math Club. MATHCOUNTS defines a U.S. student as any student who either…
- attends a school located in a U.S. state or territory, or
- attends an overseas school that is affiliated with the U.S. Departments of Defense or State.
MATHCOUNTS gives club leaders the flexibility to use the provided club resources in the way that works best for their students, and does not require registered clubs to complete certain activities or follow a set schedule.
The rules and requirements for Silver Level and Gold Level are explained in the Club Leader Guide and on the Club Leaders Resources page, both of which are accessible by registered club leaders.
Questions regarding the rules of the National Math Club should be addressed to the MATHCOUNTS national office at info@mathcounts.org.
What exactly does a math club consist of? What do students do in this program?
Math club meetings will vary by group, but the National Math Club suggests using the Club Leader Calendar, which outlines weekly activities that last 30-90 minutes. Every activity can be used by groups of any size and students of just about every math skill level. All games use everyday materials, and some also can be played using the free MATHCOUNTS Club App.
Usually beginning in the fall, students attend math club meetings led by their club leaders, using free resources provided by MATHCOUNTS. Then, clubs have the option of applying for Silver and Gold Level status to earn additional recognition. Learn more about the program. Learn more about the role of a club leader.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any group of at least 4 U.S. students in grades 6-8 that has regular in-person or virtual meetings is eligible to participate in the National Math Club.
Students enrolled in grades 6-8 are eligible to participate in the National Math Club. Both schools and non-school groups such as tutoring/enrichment centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, Girl Scouts troops and National Society of Black Engineers Junior Chapters are eligible to participate, as long as the group meets the eligibility requirements stated above.
