The Marcus Garvey Scholarship Program honors the Jamaican-born activist and organizer who served as the voice of uplift for millions of African descendants worldwide in the early twentieth century. Exceptional students who share Garvey's spirit of leadership, service, and consciousness are invited to apply for selection as the 2018 Marcus Garvey Scholar.
Applicants to the Marcus Garvey Scholarship Program must:
A) identify as a person of African descent (African American, Caribbean, Afro-Latino, etc.)
B) have a high-school GPA of 3.0 or above
C) show evidence of leadership and service in an essay submission
D) be a first-time college student in Fall 2018 at an accredited U.S. college or university
E) provide proof of enrollment at an accredited U.S. college or university (if selected)
F) provide a digital headshot (if selected)
The Marcus Garvey Scholarship recipient will receive an award of $1,000. The first disbursement in the amount of $500 will be made in September, and a subsequent disbursement in the amount of $500 will be issued in January provided the awardee earns a GPA of 2.75 or higher in the Fall 2018 semester. The award is non-renewable.
Family members of Malcolm Frierson are not eligible to apply. Applications will be blindly reviewed by a selection committee to determine the recipient. The $1,000 award should be used toward college-related expenses.
