Dr. John Barras is pleased to announce that Dentistry by John Barras DDS, located in Houston, Texas, will be offering a $1,000 scholarship for people who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD or autism). The scholarship will be used to cover a portion of the tuition at the educational institution chosen by the winning applicant. The aim of the program is to encourage and assist those with autism to fulfill their educational goals.
Education and Autism
ASD includes conditions that can have a profound effect not only upon the education of individuals, but on the conduct of their daily lives. Because autism tends to have a major impact on education, Dr. Barras as well as the other dentists and staff at the office are hopeful that the offering of this scholarship will serve as an incentive to continue their education.
The 2019 Autism Scholarship
The $1,000 scholarship may be utilized as tuition assistance at a vocational school, or at a college (including junior college) or university. The funds will be paid as tuition directly to the school selected by the applicant. We do not require that an applicant be attending school when he or she submits the application; however, the funds are required be used within one year from the date the award is made.
Application Requirements
The application consists of:
A) The online form.
B) A short statement (to be uploaded) of 135 words or less setting forth the applicant's educational goals.
C) (Optional) An article (essay) (also to be uploaded) of not more than 850 words on the issue of the impact of autism on your educational experience.
We may also ask you for proof of your diagnosis. The completed application (including any upload(s)) must be in our hands no later than February 19, 2020.
