Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation annually sponsors 50 scholarships to further the postsecondary education of Navy dependents from the aviation community. Most scholarships are $5,000 and some are renewable.
Scholarships may be used for trade school certification, community college or four-year university/college undergraduate study and may be used for tuition only at an accredited institution.
If an applicant's tuition is fully covered by other scholarships from their institution, ROTC, or Post 9/11 Bill/Yellow Ribbon benefits, they are ineligible to receive a scholarship. Students attending service acadamies are also ineligible.
The recipient must accept the award for both fall and spring semesters.
If a recipient is planning on using Post 9/11 Benefits for one semester, then they must decline the scholarship.
- Dependent children and spouses of active duty, retired, honorably discharged, or deceased Enlisted or Officer U.S. Navy personnel who serve or have served in U. S. Navy Aviation.
1. Dependent Children Candidates:
- unmarried natural born, adopted or stepchildren (up to the age of 23 of the application year)
- graduate or graduating senior of an accredited high school or home school equivalent
- current college or trade school student
- enrolled or plan to be enrolled in an accredited institution as a full-time student taking a mininimum of 12 credits per semester.
2. Dependent Spouse Candidates:
- enrolled or plan to be enrolled in an accredited institution as a full-time or part-time student taking a minimum of 6 credits per semester.
- Any spouse or child (natural born, adopted or stepchild) of a member of the U.S. Navy who died while on active duty serving within a U.S. Navy aviation command may qualify regardless of length of service of the deceased sponsor.
TIME IN SERVICE REQUIREMENT
The applicant's sponsor must have served
- at least eight (8) years of active duty, or
- ADSD (Active Duty Secial Duty) such as a reservist who has been called upon to work full-time for a specified amount of time in an aviation or subordinate command, or
- a combination of both within the U.S. Navy aviation community.
These periods may be non-consecutive & do not include time spent in flight school.
QUALIFYING COMMANDS
The sponsor must have served within the U.S. Navy aviation community. These include subordinate activites and commands, both ashore and afloat, whose primary mission is in support of U.S. Navy aviation.
These include:
- Aviation squadrons (manned and unmanned)
- Aircraft Carriers
- Aviation Wings and Staffs (including CNATRA)
- Naval Air Systems Commands to include headquarters staff, PEOs and subordinate commands
- Naval Air Station-assignment must relate directly to aircraft operations (additional documentation may be required)
- Assignments to non-aviation activities, where the sponsor's billet assignment related directly to the operation, equipping, instruction, or training of aviation assets of Commander, Naval Air Forces (additional documentation may be required
