All children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of those Association members who have held Association membership for at least two (2) consecutive years immediately prior to the eligible dependent child's first application for scholarship assistance are eligible to apply for scholarship consideration.  "Any personnel who has been recently honorably discharged having been a member of or attached to a unit of the Third Marine Division (Reinf) provided the person has held Association membership for a period of at least two (2) consecutive years immediately prior to the date of the first application, be current on all annual dues payments and who continues his or her membership for the entire period of their financial assistance."

Established in 1969, to honor the loss in Vietnam of Division Commander General Bruno A. Hochmuth, the Memorial Scholarship Fund has now honored over 838 students with college scholarship awards in excess of $700,900.00.  Third Marine Division Association Scholars have consistently demonstrated excellence in colleges and universities across the United States.

First time applicants only:

  • Copy of birth certificate. Attached a note if you wish this to be returned or shredded.
  • As the due date is past the end of the spring 2023 semester, submit the transcript for Spring 2023 original in a school secure mailed envelope or email see Section D4. Below. If not available at the date of application state when the school will transmit it
  • Copy of 2024 school acceptance or enrollment letter
  • Married applicants. Copy of a marriage license that is a document issued, either by a church or state authority, authorizing a couple to marry.
  • Attach a note if you wish this to be returned or shredded.
  • Recently discharged military personnel, a copy of Form DD-214 (and DD-215 if applicable). Attach a note if you wish this to be returned or shredded.

All applicants:

  • Copy of the school’s financial award letter summarizing the financial aid to be received by the applicant for amounts on page 1
  • Copy of the school’s annual cost of attendance letter detailed by line item for the school year (tuition, fees, room & board, books, supplies).
  • This data should be the same for “School Cost line items” for amounts on page 1
  • A copy of the Applicant’s “Free Application for Federal Applicant Aid” (FAFSA) for the 2024-2025 year as filed. https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
  • For prior year 2023-2024 MSF applicants if they have not already done so, submit the transcript for Spring 2024 original in a school secure mailed envelope or email. If not available at the date of application state when the school will transmit it.

Applicant’s Essay – Required as follows:

  1. First time applicants must submit with the application an essay describing your goals and aspirations as well as what motivated you to select this course of study and school to meet your goals.
  2. Returning applicants, each recipient of an MSF award in the prior 2023-2024 academic year must write a scholarly essay on the benefits and value their education provides them for their chosen course of study leading to a profession with the assistance of the MSF. Do not dwell on education extracurricular activities.
  3. Also a written thank you note to the MSF as a separate note is appreciated.
