Emile H. Mathis II Scholarship

Scholarship Value: $2,000
Awards Available: 1

The Emile H. Mathis II Scholarship Fund was created in 2012 to recognize the life and career of University of Wisconsin-Superior alum Emile Mathis and to support the education of future generations of artists from that same institution.

Application Instructions

This scholarship is available to all students who will be or are degree seeking students in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Applications will be taken through the application portal of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. A complete application will include the application, one letter of recommendation, financial need documentation and a complete academic record (transcripts). The portal application can be found through following this link. All applications (and supporting materials - excluding the FAFSA) are due to the DSACF office by January 15th.

Financial Need

The Scholarship Committee will not consider applications for this scholarship that do not include evidence of financial need. Such evidence will be provided by a completed FAFSA form, similar to other DSACF applications. The FAFSA is not due to the DSACF office until March 1st. All family financial information will be held in strict confidence.

Selection Criteria

Recipients of the Emile Mathis Scholarship will be determined by the Scholarship Committee of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation. Committee members will review each applicant's complete application and select recipients to be approved by the DSACF Board of Trustees.

Selections will be based on - in no particular order - financial need, academic abilities, artistic abilities, and character.

Recipient Responsibilities

A) The majority of communication between recipients and the scholarship administrators will take place via email or other appropriate technology. Recipients are required to have and regularly check their email and notify the Community Foundation of any changes to their contact information.

B) Recipients of DSACF scholarships are expected to acknowledge acceptance of the award promptly. This acknowledgment will take two forms, completion of an Acceptance Form provided by the Community Foundation and secondly, a thank you letter/card to the award's sponsor. The Community Foundation will provide names and addresses as needed. If unable to accept the scholarship, the committee should be given that information and a reason in a prompt manor.

C) Recipients must inform the DSACF of all other scholarship they are receiving. Total awards for any given semester can not exceed the stated cost for attendance at that institution.

D) Recipients must complete enough credits to be recognized as a full-time student in each semester an award is made. Likewise, a satisfactory grade point average (2.5 cumulative GPA) must be maintained.

E) If the student receives funds from the college due to non-completion of a term or not attending full time, these funds are to be returned to the DSACF. If the college requirements are not met, but there is no refund, the scholarship will be forfeited.

F) The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation hopes that recipients recognize and appreciate the contributions their award has made to their futures. It further anticipates that, in the years to come, recipients find some way to give back to the community that provided them with these opportunities.

Fund Story

The Emile H. Mathis II Scholarship was created by the will of Mr. Emile Mathis. Mr. Mathis was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior and following his education he moved Racine where he opened the Mathis Gallery and Frame Shop. There he developed a great talent for collecting unique prints, from Rembrandt to Whistler. It is this collection left behind by Emile, which allowed for the creation of this wonderful scholarship to support students of the art program at UWS.
