Campus: Facilities, Residence and Location

There are two campuses in Durham: the Oshawa campus, which has a Simulation nursing lab; Integrated Manufacturing Centre; Dental Clinic; Centre for Integrated Justice Studies; 73,000-square-foot Campus Library; and the 200-seat Learning Commons. The Whitby Campus includes: Skills Training Centre, (a 40,000-square-foot expansion that will include: new programs related to new-energy careers; an innovation incubator; open access to faculty competence and campus equipment to help alternative power inventors and innovators to bring their conceptual ideas to realistic prototypes; and production of a more energy efficient and energy producing campus. On-campus housing are available to students.

The Simcoe and South Village offers 1,360 room accommodations to students, and first-year students are guaranteed slots if they meet the deadline and requirements for application. Many meals plan choices are also available and include flex dollars that can be used at all on-campus food service outlets. The New West Village residences are for upper year students. It offers 108 students independent living in a townhouse-style accommodation.

Student Services and Student Life

Durham College offers the following services: Academic Resources (Academic Advising, Centre for Students with Disabilities, Learner Support, Library), Campus Safety and Security, Career Services, Food and Housing (Food Services and Housing and Living Accommodations), First Year Students (Ask a student, Campus Terminology, First Generation Students, Orientation, and Staff to Student Mentoring Program), Health and Fitness, International Students, Laptop Learning, Student Involvement (Student Association, Student Media), and Transportation and Parking.

The Student Association (SA) gives students a positive educational experience by giving them a sense of community and variety on campus through students’ advocacy, services and support. They serve as student representatives in areas of academics and student rights. They also organize activities and events to make the student experience more fulfilling. The SA also ratifies student clubs. Some of them include: Advertising Club, Business Administration & Marketing Club, Chinese Student Association, Engineers Without Borders, Fashionable Living Affecting Student Habits, Forensic Science Society, Ithemba Choir, Model United Nations Club, Outbound Club, Salsa Styles, Science Society, Traditions, Working towards International Student Harmony, VIP Entertainment, Women in Engineering, and World University Service of Canada.

Academic Programs

There are around 100 full-time market-driven programs that the College offers. Some of the categories include Winter Start Programs, Apprenticeship Programs, Compressed Fast Track Programs, Graduate Certificates, One Year Certificates, and Skilled Trades Programs.

Famous Alumni

Some of the most famous alumni of the University include: Al Duffy (1976) — President and Chief Operating Officer, of The PIC Group serving Canada and the USA; Dave Wilson (1980) — Vice-President and General Manager at PING Canada; Andrew Popko (1987) — Vice-President, Aboriginal Relations, for Calgary-based EnCana Corporation; Rob Leth (1996) — Global TV Reporter; and Angel Williams(2001)-Female wrestler.

The automobile industry, specifically the Canadian division of General Motors Corporation, known as General Motors Canada, has always been at the forefront of Oshawa's economy. Although the workforce at General Motors of Canada has shrunk in recent years, the company continues to make significant technology and capital investments at its sites in Oshawa. While the company's once essential role in the local economy has diminished, it remains the largest local employer.
