The County of Denver and the City of Denver are both the most populous city and county within Colorado. The city is situated on the western edge of the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in the South Platte River Valley. The downtown district in Denver is located east of the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River, about 19km or 12 miles east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Because of its elevation of exactly one mile, Denver is nicknamed Mile-High City since it lies 1,609.344m or 5,280 feet or 1.6 km above sea level. In the month of November of 1858, the city of Denver was founded. It started out as a mining town which became well-known during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush situated within Western Kansas Territory. The summer of 1858, a group of gold prospectors arrived from Lawrence, in the state of Kansas and they established Montana City on the banks of the South Platte River. This was the first settlement which will later become established as Denver. Soon after its beginnings, the site faded. By summertime of 1859 on the other hand, it was abandoned in favor of St. Charles City and in favor of Auraria, named after the gold mining township with the same name situated in Georgia.

Now, the city of Denver has a fast paced growing population of about 560,000. The city has become an important center for transportation, industrial and commercial endeavors. The economy has been further influenced by the biomedical technology and telecommunication businesses. Construction, real estate, tourism and mining also play crucial parts.
