Aurora was originally known as Fletcher back when the township was initially inhabited in the 1880s. It was named after a Denver businessman, Donald Fletcher who saw real estate possibility of the land. Along with his partners, Fletcher staked out four square miles east of Denver. The township and Colorado State itself struggled through difficulties after the Silver Crash that happened during 1893.

After hard economic times fell on the area, Fletcher decided to flee the town and unfortunately, the community was left with a huge water debt. During 1907, the residents of Aurora chose to rename the township Aurora. The name was chosen after one of the subdivisions in the town. Slowly, the site started to grow behind the city of Denver until it became the fastest growing city within the United States in the latter part of the 70s and early 1980s. Aurora is made up of numerous subdivisions and still proudly carries the name of one of its first development plots.
