June 22, the year 1850 is the first documented discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountain region. Mr. Lewis Ralston was a prospector from the state of Georgia. He was on his way to the California gold fields when he decided to dip his sluice pan into a small stream near its mouth at Clear Creek. He successfully found around 1/4 ounce or 6g of gold that was then worth roughly $5. The stream was named by his companions in his honor as Ralston's Creek. All the men left early the next morning still very excited to discover the gold fields within the state of California.
