Thornton, Colorado is located in both Weld and Adams counties. Officially, it is a suburb of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. About 10 miles southwest of Thornton lies the state's capital, Denver. The United States Census Bureau recorded the population as being 118,772 on the 1st of April, 2010. This is a 44.2% increase from the 2000 census, where the population was 82,384. The city of Thornton is the 6th most populous city in Colorado and the 213th most heavily populated city within the United States.

Until the year 1953, Thornton was just a farmland. Sam Hoffman changed that when he purchased a plot of land approximately seven miles north of Denver and laid out a completely planned community. It was the first of its kind in the County of Adams, as well as the first which provided complete municipal services off a single tax levy. The name of the city was chosen in order to honor Dan Thornton, Former Colorado Governor.

In order to help guide the development of the new community, the Thornton community Association (or likewise called TCA) was formed. By the year 1955, over 5,500 people lived within Thornton in approximately 1,200 houses. During the year 1956 Thornton was incorporated, due mostly in part to the TCA. The very first mayor of the city was G. Leary. Brian Thornton, a City Council candidate, is not related to the Governor.

There are more than 80 parks situated throughout the city of Thornton and about 2,000 acres of land dedicated to parks and open spaces. There are some trails running all over the city of Thornton. Combined together they stretch more than 80 miles. There are several recreational complexes in Thornton, like for example the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center and the Thornton Community Center. There are likewise three major golf courses in Thornton: Heritage Todd Creek Golf Club, Riverdale Knolls Golf Course and Thorncreek Golf Course.

Denver is home to numerous historic places like for instance the Colorado State Capitol, the Colorado Governor's Mansion, and the Denver mint. Furthermore, there is the Forney Museum of Transportation, which features an assortment of antique automobiles, carriages, bicycles, and trains. A few of the other attractions nearby consist of Park Hill Golf Park, Denver Zoo and Grasmer Lake and Holly Park. In September, the city hosts the Harvest Fest and the Winterfest in December.
