The city of Grand Junction, Colorado is the biggest city in the Western portion of the state. This southwestern Colorado city is situated 247 miles from the capital, the city of Denver. According to the census of 2010, the city's population was 58,566, making it the most heavily populated city on the Colorado Western Slope and the 15th most densely inhabited city in Colorado State.

Grand Junction is a city with a council-manager government form that is the most populous city of Mesa County, Colorado, United States and also the county seat. Grand Junction serves as a vital transportation and commercial center in the large area between the Continental Divide and the Green River. Based on the Census of the year 2010, the Grand Junction Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 146,723.

Grand Junction is situated along the Colorado River. From the south, it receives the Gunnison River too. The name "Grand" refers to the historical upper Colorado River, which was renamed during the year 1921. The word "Junction" comes from the joining of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers. The nickname "River City," has been given to the city of Grand Junction for obvious reasons.

The Grand Valley, only a short distance from Grand Junction is a key fruit growing region. Grand Junction lies near this mid-point of Grand Valley which is a 30 miles or 48 kilometers arching valley which was initially home to the Ute people. In the 1880s, the region was inhabited by white farmers. Throughout recent decades, numerous wineries have become established in the area as well.

There are numerous canyons and mesas which overlook Grand Junction on the western side. The Colorado National Monument and public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management also border Grand Junction. A well-known series of cliffs which define the Grand Valley's northern part are referred to as the Book Cliffs.

The Country Jam Ranch is situated close to the city of Grand Junction just north of I-70 at the Mack exit. This is a permanent festival location constructed for music festivals, including Country Jam, an event which has been held since the year 1992 and one which attracts thousands of country music fans to the region.

The region near the city of Grand Junction is a popular mountain biking location, with numerous bikers coming from the Salt Lake City area and the Front Range of Colorado. Some travel from as far away as California to enjoy the area's abundant single-track trails. There are 2 main trails amongst others which are the Kokopelli and Tabegauche trails. They run up to Moab, Utah from near Loma.

Throughout the economic meltdown referred to as "Black Sunday," that happened on May 2, the year 1982; started by the then Colorado Governor, Richard Douglas Lamm; when he called the President of Exxon. He stated that the Exxon Company would cut its losses while retaining mining rights to the uneconomic oil. This bust was felt statewide because Exxon had invested more than 5 billion USD into the State of Colorado.
