The city of Fairbanks, Alaska is a home-rule city. The city of Fairbanks likewise serves as the borough seat of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. With a population of roughly 31,500, the city of Fairbanks is the 2nd largest city in Alaska State, next to the city of Anchorage. It is the principal city of the Fairbanks, Alaska Metropolitan Statistical Area, that has a population of 97,581.

The city of Fairbanks is situated at the confluence of the Tanana and Chena Rivers and is nestled in the Tanana Valley. The northern border of the city is a chain of hills, that extend to the White Mountains and the Yukon River. The Tanana River forms the southern border of the city. South of the Tanana River is a 160 km stretch of bog and marsh that rises into the Alaska Range. On clear days these mountains can be seen from Fairbanks. To the east and west are low valleys and ridges up to 910 m above sea level.

Fairbanks was prone to serious flooding in its early history. Flooding was caused by heavy rainfalls or by ice jams in spring breakup. During August the year 1967, a heavy rainfall caused the Chena River to flood practically the entire Fairbanks township. This catastrophic overnight flood triggered the creation of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project. A 13 km spillway and 15 m dam were constructed in the Chena River. The reason for the project was to be able to divert the Chena upstream from Fairbanks City into the Tanana River, and protect the city of Fairbanks from a future flood.

Fairbanks is the home of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The city of Fairbanks has a diverse economy. Government provides significant employment due to the fact that city, borough, federal and state government services are located here. Around 33 percent of the population is working in government services. Industries include transportation, mining, communication, manufacturing, financial, and medical services. The region is home to Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base. Tourism is a strong sectors with roughly 325,000 tourists visiting the city of Fairbanks each year.
