The city of Vernon is situated in the south-central region of BC. The city got its name from the previous BC MLA, Forbes George Vernon. He helped found the famed Coldstream Ranch. On December 30, year 1892, Vernon city was incorporated. In the area known as Greater Vernon, or the metropolitan region, the population is 55,418, whilst the City of Vernon has a population of 35,944. Individuals who reside here are known as "Vernonites."

Vernon is known for its skiing and hockey during the winter and its lakes, beaches and water sports during the summer. It is an all year tourist destination. A lot of individuals from Vancouver and Calgary rely on it as a weekend get-away. Among the major events in summertime which Vernon hosts is a large Slo-Pitch tournament.

Predator Ridge Resort is among the several golf courses within the area. This resort is a 36-hole community and golf resort which is amongst just 2 public courses within Western Canada to have been ranked by Score Magazine as among the top 25 golf courses in the last 8 years. Predator Ridge has proudly hosted the Skins Game twice. The first time was during 2000 and featured Fred Couples, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson and Mike Weir. During the year 2008, the course held the event all over again and Mike Weir, Camilo Villegas, Colin Montgomerie, Fred Couple and Greg Norman graced the course. A new Fred Couples Signature course is now open. It is known as "The Rise" and it showcases unsurpassed views of the city of Vernon itself together with views of the Okanagan Lake.

Skiing is one of the most well-known winter sports within the city of Vernon. There are two major ski places there. They are Silverstar Mountain Resort and Sovereign Lake Nordic Club. Silver Star is identified as one of the top ski resorts in North America. It has a big cross-country skiing area which hosted a 1991 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event. Sovereign Lake is known for over fifty km of skiing terrain. It is considered a premier cross-country skiing site. As the host of a 2005 FIS Cross-Country World Cup event, this Nordic Club gained worldwide exposure.

Curling is a different well-known sport within Vernon. The local Vernon Curling Club has a lot of curlers participating frequently. Before, the city has hosted various major national curling events comprising the 1979 Canadian Senior Women's Curling Championship and the 1992 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. In the year 2004, the Canadian Senior Curling Championships was also held. In 2008, the first worldwide event was the Ford Women's Curling Championship that was held at the Vernon Multiplex.

Tennis is also very common within Vernon city. There are lots of picturesque courts with amazing views. The Vernon Tennis Association was established in October the year 2008. Its objective was to bring together all tennis players of different skill levels within the Vernon area so as to offer both social and competitive programs that were not being currently provided to player. Now, the VTA operates classes 15 hours each and every week in association with Greater Vernon Parks, Recreation and Culture.

One of the most popular locations in Vernon is Kalamalka Beach. It has a large pier that was constructed by a local service club for the purpose of diving, sunbathing and jumping. Beach volleyball is particularly popular in the evenings. Kin Beach and Paddle Wheel Park situated on Okanagan Lake are among the most popular of the twenty or so bigger beaches found in the area. It is possible to find your own private beach haven or real estate if you feel the bigger beaches are too crowded. There are various pieces of beach real estate available. If one searches hard enough, they could potentially find their very own private accessible beach and perhaps even their own private lake. The possibilities within the area are endless.
