During 1892, white inhabitants began to arrive in the region after the Cheyenne-Arapaho reservation was opened in the western Oklahoma Territory. The present location of Elk City lay along the Great Western Cattle Trail running from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas, where ranchers drove their cattle. Agriculture played a really major role within Elk City during the 20th century.
The city is today a modern trading center serving roughly 50,000 area inhabitants. The most important industries to Elk City's economy are agriculture, petroleum, tourism, wind energy, manufacturing, health care and transportation. The city has had slow but steady growth during the past decade due to the relocation and opening of drilling companies and oil field services there. For a lot of the areas ranchers, the city is still a key retail center, then again, agriculture is not nearly as prominent as in previous years. Wind farming has become increasingly important ever since 2009 when Acciona Energy commissioned the first wind farm of Elk City, Red Hills Wind Farm located north of the city. The farm's 82 wind turbine generators produce enough power for 40,000 houses. Wind farming is expected to become a growing industry.
