Lincoln is the county seat of Lancaster County. It is the second most popular city within Nebraska State in the United States. The population of the city of Lincoln was estimated as 258,379 in the 2010 Census. The city of Lincoln is home of the University of Nebraska.

Lincoln was originally established in 1856 as the village of Lancaster. It later became in the year 1859 the county seat of the newly created Lancaster County. Omaha has been the capital city of the Nebraska Territory since 1854, when the territory was initially formed. The majority of the population was located on the Platte River's south side. The legislature voted to move the capital south of the river and as far west as possible after a main part of the territory south of the Platte considered annexation to the state of Kansas. They chose the region of Lancaster due mainly to the salt flats and marshes that naturally occurred within the area.
