The city of Powell River is located in the southwestern region of BC, but sits on the northern part of the Sunshine Coast. The city of River Powell is the seat of the Powell River Regional District. Most of the cities population resides on Malaspina Strait's eastern shores, that could be located between the Mainland and Texada Island. Even with the nearness to Vancouver and a few other densely inhabited cities, the community remains extremely isolated because of it's geographical surroundings. There are two intervening fjords which prevent the construction of an adjoining road connection together with Vancouver.

Visitors flock to Powell River because of its charming seaside setting, superb climate, and sandy beaches. Adventure travelers as well as families are guaranteed to find numerous outdoor activities and recreational sites to suit their requirements.

The regional district of Powell River runs all the way from Saltery bay to the south to Lund in the north. The city is boarded by the magnificent coastal mountain range on one side and the Georgia Straight on the other.

The cultural diversity of Powell River is well-known for it's interesting heritage, outdoor recreational activities, and Aboriginal tours. There are a few charming Bed and Breakfasts that are scattered all over the city of Powell River. The city of Powell River offers great opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, scuba diving and kayaking.

Every year for around 1,760 hours, the sun shines. In addition, the city of Powell River has the mildest weather within the nation. The landscape is fantastic, with miles of hiking trails which lead to beautiful viewing sites and cascading waterfalls.

The city of Powell River hosts among the most premiere diving locales on the west coast. The waters are clear and beautiful and the strong currents in the Malaspina Straight add to the magnificence of the site. There are over 100 dive sites that have captured worldwide attention from scuba divers. There is one absolutely spectacular location that is surrounded by a ring of ten Liberty ships that were sunk offshore to protect the deep-water harbor in 1947. Marine life, such as wolf eels and giant octopi, seek shelter in a few of the sunken ships and create several fascinating sites for divers.

In the summer the area surrounding the city of Powell River sparks with wildlife like for instance raptors, bears and salmon. The black bears which inhabit the area normally avoid the city of Powell River, choosing to stay on the backwoods logging roads. Osprey, eagles, otters, and pine marten do not have the same preference and are usually found approaching the Sliammon Creek seashore. The Sliammon Fish Hatchery, situated roughly 3 miles north of the Powell River bridge, offers a superb view of both predator and prey.
