After the formation of the Town of North York, it quickly became an urban area. As the township became more urbanized, the town became a borough in the year 1967, and then became a city by 1979. Initially, the city of North York was an agricultural hub which included many villages. It grew after WWII, and it became like the sprawling North American suburbs in the 50's and 60's.

Main attractions within North York City consist of a 19th century village, the Black Pioneer Village. The Ontario Science Centre has about 800 science-oriented exhibits. York University houses the Jane and Finch neighborhood. Shopping centers in the city of North York include the Fairview Mall and Yorkdale Shopping Centre. There are also small stores in the city, such as the Sheppard Centre, Jane Finch Mall, Steeles West Market Mall, Yorkgate Mall, Bayview Village, and Centerpoint Mall. There is a small plaza which contains Chinese supermarkets and restaurants located at the junction between Finch Avenue and Leslie Street.

The city of North York has more of a suburban feel. Thus, the past Mayor of North York and Toronto's Mel Lastman, took the necessary steps to help develop the North York Centre along Yonge Street between Sheppard and Finch Avenues. The central area is gradually becoming more suburban in the past years, and it is ever more becoming a smaller version of North York downtown. Major corporations who built their own office towers along the central North York are Equifax, Xerox, Lindt and Sprungli, Cadbury Adams, Procter and gamble and Nestle. McDonald's is likewise situated within North York City.
